SOUTH AUSTRALIA
NORTHERN FLINDERS RANGES
PARACHILNA, KATI THANDA–LAKE EYRE, ARKAROOLA and WILPENA POUND
For a limited time, the desert has become an inland sea
See Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre while there is water to see.
Four legendary South Australian landscapes. Three extraordinary days. One helicopter. Just four guests.
From Adelaide, fly deep into the Flinders Ranges for dinner and an overnight stay at the iconic Prairie Hotel, Parachilna. Explore Parachilna Gorge and Nilpena Ediacara National Park, where 550-million-year-old fossil beds reveal some of Earth’s earliest complex animal life.
Then fly north to Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre — 15 metres below sea level and Australia’s largest salt lake. Following rare inland rains in 2026, the stark salt pan has transformed into a vast inland sea. From the air, it is extraordinary. From the ground, almost incomprehensible.
Lunch awaits at a pub in one of the outback’s tiniest towns.
Continue over the ancient ridgelines of Arkaroola, where an unforgettable night beneath the stars awaits, before the final revelation: Wilpena Pound, the Flinders Ranges’ natural cathedral.
Bookended by Adelaide. Limited to four.
No crowds. No convoy. No compromise.
Just three remarkable days, extraordinary access and an outback experience you’ll talk about for years.

Day 1: Adelaide → Parachilna → Parachilna Gorge → Nilpena Ediacara National Park
-
Depart Adelaide in the morning and head north, crossing the Clare Valley and Southern Flinders Ranges as the landscape gradually changes from farmland to the dry, open country of the Flinders.

-
Arrive at Parachilna for a leg stretch, fuel and lunch at the famous Prairie Hotel. From here, explore Parachilna Gorge before continuing to Nilpena Ediacara National Park for a guided look at one of the world's most important fossil sites — an extraordinary window into life more than 550 million years ago.

Nilpena Ediacara National Park
Nilpena is one of those places that changes the way you look at the landscape.
Our own visit to Nilpena gave us the opportunity to spend time with a palaeontologist and members of the research team, exploring the interpretive centre, its interactive displays and the fossil beds themselves. There was time to ask questions, understand what we were looking at and hear about the continuing work being carried out at this remarkable site.
The story the interpretive centre tells is almost difficult to comprehend.
Around 550 million years ago, this part of South Australia was beneath a shallow, warm sea, inhabited by some of the earliest complex forms of animal life.
Long before dinosaurs, these strange soft-bodied creatures lived and moved across the ancient sea floor. Their impressions were preserved in the sediments, giving us an extraordinary snapshot of life at a time when the animal world was only beginning to emerge.
Today, the same sea floor is part of the dry, open landscape of the Flinders Ranges.
The fossils themselves range from tiny impressions no larger than a pinhead to specimens extending to around 18 inches across. Seeing them in the fossil beds — and then understanding what you are actually looking at through the interpretive displays — brings the scale of geological time into rather remarkable focus.
Perhaps that is what makes Nilpena so memorable. You are standing in what appears to be an arid outback landscape, yet beneath your feet is the preserved floor of an ancient sea and a record of life from more than half a billion years ago.
It is much more than simply looking at fossils. For a few hours, you are given a glimpse into an entirely different world.

-
Return to Parachilna for dinner and an overnight stay at the Prairie Hotel.

Day 2 — Parachilna →Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre → William Creek → Arkaroola
-
Start early with a sunrise flight to the east. There is something rather special about watching the sun come over the horizon from the air, with the changing colours of the outback unfolding below.

-
Return to the Prairie Hotel for breakfast before taking to the air again, crossing Lake Eyre South and continuing towards the extraordinary expanse of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre.

-
Land at William Creek for a break, lunch and a chance to stretch your legs at one of Australia's most remote outback settlements.
-
Back in the air, continue across Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre before heading towards Marree and then north into the Flinders Ranges. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged as you make your way towards Arkaroola, where you'll land for the evening.

-
Dinner and over night at Arkaroola

-
After dark, experience the night sky at the Arkaroola International Dark Sky Sanctuary with the Under the Stars stargazing experience — a fitting end to a day spent exploring some of the most remote country in South Australia
