KATI THANDA–LAKE EYRE  and 
FLINDERS RANGES 

Four of South Australia's most legendary outback landscapes, seen the way almost nobody gets to see them — from a helicopter, low and slow, over five unforgettable days.

 

This isn't a scenic flight - It's an odyssey: the vast white nothing of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, a night in the tiniest town in the outback, the ancient ridgelines of Arkaroola, and the natural cathedral of Wilpena Pound — bookended by Adelaide.

 

Positioned for small groups (4 guests) seeking a premium, low-density, high-access alternative to fixed-wing outback tours.

 

The helicopter is the story here — it's what lets guests land where the tour buses can't.

Day 1:  Adelaide → Parachilna, Parachilna Gorge, Nilpena 

  • Depart Adelaide early morning, direct flight north over the Clare Valley and Southern Flinders Ranges — first taste of the changing colour of the land.

  • Fuel and lunch stop at Parachilna — a classic outback pub stop to refuel (both plane and people) before pushing further north.

 

  • Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda) — currently in flood. The centrepiece of the day, and right now the rarest version of it. Fly the length of Australia's largest lake, tracing the Warburton Groove where floodwater pours in, out to Belt Bay, the lowest point in the country — vast sheets of water, dense birdlife (pelicans, banded stilts, gulls drawn in from across the continent) and colour the dry lakebed simply can't match. A once-in-years window worth building the marketing around.

 

  • Land at William Creek (population: a handful) for the night. Iconic outback pub, cold beer, wild stories, million-star sky.Overnight: William Creek Hotel

Day 2 — Parachilna →Kati Chanda - Lake EyreWilliam Creek 

  • Early morning flight over the Anna Creek Painted Hills — banded ochre-and-white sandstone country, often called Australia's Grand Canyon, best appreciated exactly the way you'll see it: from the air.

  • Cross the Simpson Desert fringe and Strzelecki Track country en route to the Northern Flinders Ranges.

 

  • Arrive Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary — 610 sq km private conservation reserve, 1,600-million-year-old geology, an International Dark Sky Sanctuary.

 

  • Afternoon options: the legendary Ridgetop 4WD Tour to Sillers Lookout, a bushwalk to a waterhole for yellow-footed rock-wallabies, or simply relax at the lodge.

 

  • Evening astronomy session at one of Arkaroola's observatories — some of the clearest night skies in the Southern Hemisphere.Overnight: Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary

Day 3 — Arkaroola → Wilpena Pound → Adelaide

  • Morning flight south through the Gammon and Flinders Ranges, tracking the rugged spine of the ranges.

 

  • Wilpena Pound — land inside or beside this natural amphitheatre, one of the most photographed landforms in Australia. Time for a short walk, photos from Wangara Lookout, or a relaxed lunch at Wilpena Pound Resort.

 

  • Final leg home — south through the Southern Flinders and Clare Valley, back into Adelaide by late afternoon.

Day 4— Arkaroola → Wilpena Pound → Adelaide

Day 5 — Arkaroola → Wilpena Pound → Adelaide
